Polar Bear

Scientific Name: Thalarctos maritimus

Habitat: Pack ice and coastal areas of the Arctic

Food: Seals; also birds, berries, and roots

Facts: Polar bears are very well adapted for living in their cold, icy environment. They have thick fur and a layer of fat which conserves body heat. Adult polar bears can weigh up to 1,000 pounds (450 kg). At birth, the cubs weigh about 2 pounds (0.9 kg) and are helpless, deaf, and blind.

Polar bears have fur on the soles of their feet, which protects their feet from freezing and provides traction on slippery ice.
